Orchid forays into anti-AIDS segment
EPP News Bureau - Mumbai

Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, Chennai based bulk antibiotic drug manufacturing company is all set to make their presence in the lucrative anti-AIDS drug business segment. Their anti-AIDS cocktail of four to five bulk actives is going to hit the market soon. The Drug Controller of India has already gave the nod for one of its anti-AIDS processes.

According to the deputy managing director of the company Dr C B Rao their decision to enter the anti-infective market is a part of its strategic move to add up their value chain by diversifying their business into non-cephalosporin business, which is its core area of operation. As they a strong presence in the antibiotic segment their foray into anti-infectionary business such as anti-AIDS is supposed to be a clever move.

He said that the company has already got the DCI nod for one of its processes, Indinavir which is an effective cure for the grave disease. The company has also developed different processes for Lamivudine and Ziduvodine and is likely to get the approval from the DCI.

As the AIDS virus is mutative in nature a single drug is not sufficient to combat the disease and thus the company is planning to offer a cocktail of four to five anti-AIDS bulk actives.

According to him Latin America and Africa are the two potential markets.
