Panacea to commercialise NDDS for eye drops
EPP News Bureau - Mumbai

Panacea Biotec has signed an agreement with National Research Development Corporation, New Delhi to commercialise the know-how for an ophthalmic formulation using nanotechnology. The know-how for the formulation of of ocular delivery based on nanotechnology was originally developed by Prof A N Maitra of the Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi and it sold the rights for this technology to NRDC.

Most eye diseases are treated with topical application of solutions administered as eye drops. One of the major problems encountered with this is the rapid and extensive precorneal loss caused by the drainage and high tear fluid turnover. After instillation of an eye drop, typically less than 2-3 per cent of the applied drug penetrates the cornea and reaches the intraocular tissues. The new formulation would provide high and sustained release of drugs to the cornea with an enhanced corneal permeability.
