Novuspharma
begins phase II study on pancreatic cancer drug
Monza,
Italy
NOVUSPHARMA SpA, a leading biotechnology company focused on cancer,
today announces that recruitment has begun for a phase II trial
of its novel tri-platinum complex, BBR 3464, for the treatment of
advanced pancreatic cancer.
The open label multi-centre trial, to be conducted in the US, is
being co-ordinated by investigators at Virginia Commonwealth University,
Richmond, and will enrol up to 50 patients who have not previously
received chemotherapy. This study complements other phase II studies
currently ongoing in the US with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients
who have failed one prior chemotherapy regimen and in Europe, where
BBR 3464 is being evaluated against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC),
ovarian and gastric cancer.
BBR 3464 is part of a class of innovative platinum compounds, including
bisplatinum compounds, which were developed by the scientific team
who founded Novuspharma, in collaboration with Prof Nick Farrell.
Existing platinum-based drugs, such as cisplatin, are one of the
most widely used classes of compounds in the first-line treatment
of cancer. They work by binding to the DNA within cancer cells,
disrupting cell growth and replication and inducing apoptosis (cell
death).
