NIPER holds parallel session of Indian Science Congress

A parellel symposium of the 91st Indian Science Congress was recently held at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, Punjab.

Dr A M Chakrabarty from the University of Illinios at Chicago, USA presided over the symposium with Dr C S Dey, professor, Department of Biotechnology, NIPER as the section secretary. Dr Susan Kling Finston, Esq. associate vice-president, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, USA, spoke on the role of academic scientists in the US in the biotechnology revolution and the commercialisation of scientific breakthroughs under Bayh-Dole.

According to a press release, Dr Finston suggested that it was India’s turn to reap the benefits by adopting Bayh-Dole and create a strong platform for bringing the benefits of collaborative efforts to the public.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Biocon India Ltd, Bangalore, India said that after the infotech boom, we should now look forward for the biotechnology boom and India needs to focus on moving from innovation to invention considering the very impressive resource of scientists it had.

Dr Polly Roy from the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, stressed on the importance of quality control in vaccines. Dr Krishna R Dronamraju, president, Foundation for Generic Research, USA spoke on ‘‘Science, society and excellence: Biological and social consequences of recombinant DNA research.’’ While Dr S Narayan, Economic advisor to the Prime Minister and secretary to the Govt of India spoke on the integration of science and development, Dr Altaf Lal, science counsellor, Embassy of USA, spoke on the health and human sciences programmes in India and the bilateral Indo-US programmes.
