America’s Merck & Co. last week withdrew its blockbuster pain drug Vioxx following a review of data from a three-year colon cancer trial which showed there was an increased relative risk for confirmed cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, beginning after 18 months of treatment in the patients taking the anti-inflammatory drug compared to those taking placebo.
