A number of drugs that are banned abroad are freely available in the Indian market. Why? At what cost? Who decides to let them be? Sapna Dogra takes a closer look.

‘Pharmacists should be allowed to practice their profession’
Prof. B Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India has ambitious plans for the pharmacists in the country. He wants to take the pharmacy profession to new heights adopting global standards through the proposed amendment to Pharmacy Act 1948. The principal JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty, Dr Suresh is Chairman, Pharmacy Education division of Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Association, a member of the All India Board of Pharmaceutical Education and part of the Board of Faculty Development in Technical Education of the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. Dr Suresh speaks to Sapna Dogra about the future he would like to carve for the country's pharmacists.

Sterling acquires Torrent's facility for Rs 55 crore

Licensing for Tamiflu may begin
Indian generic firms might finally be able to manufacture Tamiflu. In a statement, Roche AG, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant that holds patent for the drug, said that it is ready to issue emergency licenses of the drug to generic companies across the world.

Stock Watch
The Indian pharma industry is under pressure this year due to the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT). Most of the companies witnessed a slowdown in sales due to de-stocking on account of VAT in the first quarter. However, in spite of lower sales, pharma companies posted better-than-expected results in the first quarter.

Subtronics (India) launched their latest portable gas monitor for chlorine model PTi. It measures chlorine levels ranging from 0-200 ppm and has an accuracy of 0.5 ppm.
