United
we stand
Soaring R & D investments and controlled drug prices.
Where does this leave pharmaceutical companies? Having understood
the need to strike a fine balance between investments and
revenues, Indian pharmacos are collaborating with various
government-backed institutions for partnerships in R &
D and drug distribution. Nandini Patwardhan explains.
A
quick scan of various initiatives
A developing country like ours is known for PPP initiatives
in infrastructure and healthcare. The initiatives in the pharmaceutical
arena are rarely publicised by the partners involved. However,
there have been a few noteworthy programmes and projects initiated
under the PPP model.
PPP
Projects with CSIR
At present, there are 37 ongoing projects, which cover diverse
areas ranging from liquid crystals to decentralised power
packs; mesoscale modelling to nano-material catalysts; microbiological
conversions to biotech molecules; functionalisation of alkane
to advanced nano-materials and composites; defunctionalisation
of carbohydrates to biodegradable plastics; novel office computing
platforms to low-cost horizontal axis wind turbine; and new
targets and markers for cancer to advanced drug delivery systems.
Search
for the right data
A new generation of data mining algorithms, more affordable
prices for memory processing and storage, and an explosion
in electronic biomedical data, have pushed many biostatisticians
to take a harder look at data mining. Once scorned as a way
to twist and dredge data until it matches the desired hypothesis,
data mining has now proven to be an essential advantage in
an increasingly demanding and competitive market. George Varghese
takes a look at data mining in pharma.
