'IndiaChem has become a global event'

IndiaChem 2006, the much-awaited international conference jointly organsied by FICCI and Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, is scheduled to take place in Mumbai from November 8-10, 2006. Rajan Kohli, Deputy Secretary General, FICCI delineates its salient features to Sapna Dogra.

What is the objective of IndiaChem 2006?

IndiaChem is our flagship B2B event for the chemical, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals industries, which is organised once in every two years. It is popular for being the only conference-cum-exhibition of this sort, representing these sectors. The conference would highlight India as an investment destination, a base for technology development and technology transfer. It is an ideal platform for the interaction of the industry and policymakers to discuss and exchange thoughts over issues and opportunities.

We will be showcasing Indian capabilities in these sectors to attract global investors. With support from the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, this is the fourth time that this event is being organised in the country. IndiaChem has become a global event with 42 percent of international participation in 2004, which helped India and global companies to explore the possibilities of mergers, joint ventures, setting up of R&D base and strategic alliances.

What is the theme of conference?

There would be back-to-back conferences for two days, which will have international and national speakers of repute. The theme of the conference is ‘Building Capabilities Through Innovations and Technology Exchange’.

The event was started by FICCI in 2000, to promote the industry and set up trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions in order to make the pharmaceuticals, chemicals and petrochemical sectors globally competitive. It is a platform for networking and deal making because of the huge business opportunities it offers, in terms of new drugs, machinery, innovations and cutting-edge technologies for the industry players. With special buyer and seller meets, one can expect big business deals. This year, we are hoping for business worth about Rs 350 crore as against Rs 250 crore in 2004. In 2004, we had 255 participants and about 20,000 visitors.

Tell us about the concept of partner country, guest country and focus country?

Italy is our partner country this year and it is participating in IndiaChem for the first time. The partner country gets special place, signage and other advantages in the event. This year the focus country is Germany and the partner state is Gujarat. Japan has been accorded the status of the guest country. Though Japan is not our partner country, about 30 Japanese companies would be participating.
