Wyeth introduces Tygacil in India

Our News Bureau - Mumbai

Wyeth has introduced Tygacil (tigecycline) in select cities in India following its approval by the Drug Controller General of India. Tygacil is the first antibiotic in a new class called glycylcyclines. It is indicated for use in complicated infections of the skin and soft tissue and complicated intra-abdominal infections. Tygacil has in-vitro activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including multi-drug resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Tygacil is available as an orange lyophilized powder or cake. Each Tygacil vial contains 50 mg tigecycline lyophilized powder for intravenous infusion. The product was first approved in US in July 2005 and it has been launched in 33 countries in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America as of May 2007.
