Good drugs come in great packages
And great packaging did get recognised and rewarded at the
Interphex India 2007 when the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) and Bilcare
awarded pharmaceutical companies for their packaging initiatives. Nandini

Packaging
is one area in Indian pharma that is yet to witness a 36o degrees innovation.
However, a few companies, realising the power of this tool in branding, curbing
counterfeits, etc have taken proactive efforts to wrap their wares. Having recognised
their efforts, IPA and Bilcare announced winners for the best packaging in pharmaceuticals
for 2007-2008 at Interphex India 2007, in Mumbai.
For the past two years, IPA and Bilcare are awarding companies
jointly with a view to create awareness and continued education in the area
of pharmaceutical packaging.
Three pharmaceutical com-panies in India were awarded for
their contribution towards Best Packaging in three distinct categories for the
year 2007-2008-Glaxo Smithkline, Ranbaxy Laboratories, and Dr Reddy's Laboratories.
While Glaxo Smithkline won the award for Best Packaging in
Solid dosage for Crocin 650 and Cold 'n' Flu; the award for Best Packaging in
Liquid dosage was collected by Ranbaxy Laboratories' Twin Pocket Nested Pou.
These two awards were presented by Mr DV Karnik, President, Technical Operations,
FDC. IPA President, Mr. Priolkar presented the award for Best Packaging in Other
dosage forms to Dr Reddy's Laboratories for Reditux 500 Injection Novel tray
pack.
Mr. Suresh Balsubramani, Chief Marketing Officer, Bilcare
expressed at the event that, pharmaceutical packaging is becoming increasingly
vital in context with maintaining the quality of the product through out its
shelf life, innovativeness, measurers in fighting counterfeiting, user friendly
designs, safety and aesthetics. "More and more companies are realizing
the importance of effective packaging. This award is primarily to recognize
and encourage pharmaceutical companies towards innovation in Packaging",
he added. Subodh Priolkar, President, IPA said, "This is the second year
of IPA Bilcare awards and I am pleased to see the overwhelming response from
the Industry to participate and consider packaging as an integral part of their
pharmaceutical drug."
