As more Indian pharma companies hive off their R&D units,
Viveka Roychowdhury analyses the methods behind the moves
2008 may well be a watershed year for the Indian pharmaceutical
industry. Five to six major Indian pharma companies, with
a few more sitting on the fence, have announced plans to hive
off their New Chemical Entity (NCE) research units into stand-alone
companies.
Zydus
Cadila, Prolong ink drug discovery deal
Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila and Prolong Pharmaceuticals Inc,
a US-based, venture-backed drug delivery research and development
company, have announced a collaboration for development of
a next generation therapeutic protein, 'PEG-EPO', for the
treatment of severe anemia.
Orchid
gets formulation facilty approval; collaborates with Cellworks
Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals has announced that its
formulation facilities comprising the Cephalosporin plant
and Penicillin plant have been approved by the Medicines Control
Council (MCC), South Africa.

Pharmaceuticals to market anti-osteoarthritic nutritional
supplement
Elder Pharmaceuticals has recently signed an in-licensing
agreement with GNOSIS S p A, Italy.

Pharmaceuticals acquires Kopran's brand Smyle
Smyle, the flagship over the counter brand of Kopran, has
been bought over by Mumbai based Maneesh Pharmaceuticals for
Rs 52.88 crore.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR)
have recognised the R&D division of LifeCell.
Wockhardt
enters into a strategic alliance to market Cetirizine tablets
in the US
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology major Wockhardt received
approval for an ANDA from the United States Food and Drug
Administration (US FDA) for marketing the tablets containing
five mg and 10 mg Cetirizine Hydrochloride, which is used
for treating various forms of allergy.

acquires API manufacturing unit
Alembic has announced the acquisition of an Active Pharmaceutical
Ingredients (API) manufacturing facility of Nirayu for Rs
17.50 crore. It is a US FDA approvable facility.

Dr Reddy's Laboratories has launched Supanac (Diclofenac potassium
immediate release 50 mg tablets) in India, increasing its
offering in the Rs 2,700 crore NSAID (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory
drugs) market according to June MAT '07 IMS ORG.
